I had to change insurance on our home after our policy was cancelled due to nonpayment after our morgage company paid our premium too late. The new policy was of course more expensive and was started in Feb 2010 now its May and the insurance company sent me a letter of cancellation stating "underwritting reasons." Is that even legal? I thought they only had 60 days to decide not to insure a property. So, now I have to figure out why they are cancelling and try to find another company to insure our house which of course will cost even more than last time, this is ridiculous.

After using State Farm for 6 years they have just given me a non renewal notice due to two small claims in the last year. They also put something on the CLE database so no other insurance company will cover me, my only course of action is to buy direct from the state of GA at 6 times my previous rate. This should be illegal.

I've filed 2 claims in 1 year, theft and water damage due to a water hose on the washing machine. I received a notice of cancellation in 6/09 then I received a policy from Allstate with a new policy but it was $1067.00 a year highter. Since I knew that I had 2 claims I was going to just work through it. I tried to pay my payment (that had more than doubled) and the customer service explained that I had no insurance even though I had a policy in hand. I'm waiting for an answer from my local insurance agent now.

I do understand that every insurance company has a financial side but how can I be penalized for wanting what I pay you for. That's like me quiting my job because they want me to do my work. Am I wrong for feeling like a victim?

We made two claims on our home insurance over the past year - both for theft. We recently received notice of nonrenewal. We obviously wouldn't have filed the claims if we knew that this would happen. In both instances of theft, the major items that were stolen were our bikes. Bikes! We couldn't buy a new bike with the check we received from the insurance company after paying our deductible, but we thought a little compensation was better than nothing. And now, here we are. My question is this: is it required of insurance agencies to notify a homeowner that there will be the possibility of nonrenawal when filing a claim? And, if not, WHY? My husband and I have never heard of this before and are totally stressed out. Please help.

Sorry to hear of your Home Insurance woes. First thing I would suggest is shopping around to see if another insurer will accept you. I would also suggest you contact your state insurance department. You can find contact information for all US state insurance departments on the following page:

I've had the same homeowners insurance company for 21 years. This past year I was late, called for an amount to pay but was told I was cancelled. They reissued and reinstated me, I signed a form faxed to me and agreed to pay in full for an amount that was higher than the previous cost. I faxed that back, sent a check, but received a call the day after my check was received telling me Auto-Owners declined my check due to no roof on an attached garage and a tarp on an add on room that was leaking. Agreeably I do need to make some repairs, however, after signing an agreement and my sending a check in agreement, how can they then say no? Wasn't that a contract?

The next amount I heard was $2300! That is total price goudging. It's nonsensical to me that even though I found it hard to pay on time, and had earlier paid in installments, that now I can't even afford the cost with this dramatic increase in price.

Do I have recourse? How should I proceed? I did print out the information offered on this website but still feel frustrated. Any further advice?

If I can I'd like to refinance to get taxes, insurance and housepayments into one lump so this doesn't occur again. But, now that I do not have this insurance I do not know how to proceed with this either.
